This week I wish to share with you the graduation speech for the Class of 2026. While written for the graduating class the message is a narrative I keep before all students throughout their journey at Oakhill College.

Class of 2026, tonight you become an Oakhill Graduate.

To our guests here, you may well ask, What is an Oakhill Graduate?

An Oakhill Graduate has their feet firmly grounded, aims for the stars, and knows that life's journey will not always be clearly defined, straight or predictable.
An Oakhill Graduate knows they have a strength of spirit that enables them to rise above the fleeting things and engage consciously with life.
An Oakhill Graduate strives for what matters, looks out for others, is up for the challenge, keeps the faith, is good, kind and just, and knows they contribute to God's Kingdom.

Year 12 2026, you are now the Oakhill Graduate.

t feels like only yesterday we were welcoming you into the College community for the first time, and now your journey as students at Oakhill is drawing to a close. Along the way we have shared countless experiences that have shaped you into the young men and women you are today. As you stand on the threshold of what comes next, it is natural to feel both excitement and uncertainty. Graduation is a moment to look back with gratitude and pride, while also looking forward with confidence and purpose.

Throughout your time at Oakhill, you have learned from success and grown through challenge. You have discovered that resilience is not about avoiding failure, but about rising again when life does not unfold as planned. As President John F. Kennedy once said: “The only thing we have to fear is fear itself.” Do not be afraid of the unknown. Instead, embrace the opportunities and challenges ahead with the same courage, determination and spirit that have defined your years at Oakhill College.

John F. Kennedy also challenged a generation with these words: “The New Frontier is here, whether we seek it or not.” And: “It is not a set of promises. It is a set of challenges.”

Year 12, you are now stepping into your own new frontier. For some, that frontier will be university. For others, employment, apprenticeships, travel, or new opportunities yet to be discovered. Whatever path you take, it will be uniquely your own.

The challenge before you is not simply to build a career, but to build a life. A life of service, leadership, compassion and purpose. That future is not a destination. It is an ongoing journey.

Step out from here with a desire to learn, to adapt and to innovate. Be courageous enough to stumble and wise enough to learn from your mistakes with a fear nought for caring…. Aim for the stars. Work hard. Always strive to do your very best and celebrate your successes with humility and gratitude. And when challenges arise, remember the words of Theodore Roosevelt from his famous Man in the Arena speech:
“Life belongs not to those who watch from the sidelines, but to those willing to enter the arena, to strive, to fail, to learn and to try again.”

That is the spirit of the Oakhill Graduate.

Remember the lessons learned inside and outside the classroom.

Remember the friendships you have built.

The bonds of mateship formed here are among the greatest gifts you take with you tonight.

Be eager to achieve. Serve with passion. Lead with integrity. Be good. Be kind. Be just in everything you think, do and say.

Tonight, you take that first step.

Laozi, a contemporary of Confucius said "a journey of a thousand miles begins with the first step".

As Oakhill Graduates, you have what it takes.

To Conclude: I wish to thank our parents, teachers, staff, and our P&F, Rugby, Football and Basketball Clubs, and Mr Michael O’Brien and the Board for their dedication and support.

And finally, to Year 12 2026:

Remember these words from John F. Kennedy:
“Every accomplishment starts with the decision to try.”

Because, as Winston Churchill reminds us:
“Success is not final; failure is not fatal: it is the courage to continue that counts.”

And as Master Shifu said to Po Bear:
“If you only do what you can do, you will never be more than you are.”
You are something more.

Be courageous in your choices.
Be generous in your service.
Be steadfast in your faith.
Be humble in your success.

The future awaits you, and as Oakhill Graduates, you are ready.

There are some learning experiences that students remember for a semester, there are others that remain with them for a lifetime. Our upcoming Language and Visual Arts Tour to France promises to be one of those rare opportunities that extends well beyond the classroom, creating memories, insights and experiences that will shape students long after they return home. 

From the artistic treasures of Paris to the rich cultural heritage of Lyon, our students will immerse themselves in one of the world's most influential centres of language, history, art and culture. For our French students, the journey represents the ultimate extension of their studies. While grammar exercises, vocabulary lists and classroom conversations provide the essential foundations, there is nothing quite like hearing French spoken all around you, ordering lunch from a local boulangerie, navigating public transport, or engaging with people in their own language. Suddenly, French is no longer simply a subject on a timetable. It becomes a living, breathing part of everyday life. 

In Lyon, students will have the opportunity to deepen this experience through language classes at Lyon Bleu International. Immersed in an authentic French learning environment, they will develop confidence and fluency while experiencing first hand the rhythms and nuances of French culture. Lyon itself provides the perfect backdrop, a city renowned for its history, gastronomy and cultural significance. Wandering through the UNESCO World Heritage precinct of Viewx Lyon, exploring the magnificent Fourvière district and experiencing the unique character of one of France's most beautiful cities will undoubtedly be a highlight. 

For our Visual Arts students, both Lyon and Paris offer what can only be described as an extraordinary outdoor classroom. Students will explore the remarkable painted walls of Lyon, visit the Musée Lumière, birthplace of cinematography, and experience the city's renowned Museum of Fine Arts. They will observe how art and history intersect in public spaces, architecture and cultural institutions, gaining insights that simply cannot be replicated through textbooks or screens. The Paris component of the tour elevates this learning even further. Paris has inspired generations of artists, writers, architects and creative thinkers. Students will walk through the artistic heart of Montmartre, stand beneath the iconic Sacré-Cœur, explore the historic Latin Quarter and discover firsthand why Paris has long been regarded as one of the cultural capitals of the world.

For many, a visit to the Louvre will be a defining moment. To stand before works that have shaped artistic history and study them in their original setting is an experience that transforms understanding. Similarly, visits to Versailles, Notre-Dame, the Arc de Triomphe, the Champs-Élysées and a cruise along the Seine offer students opportunities to engage directly with the history, architecture and cultural life they have previously encountered only through study. Yet, as valuable as these iconic locations are, it is often the smaller moments that leave the deepest impression. A conversation in French that suddenly flows naturally. A sketch completed while sitting in a Parisian garden. A shared meal with friends after a day of exploration. A journal reflection written after standing before a masterpiece. These are the experiences that build confidence, independence and cultural understanding. Such opportunities do not happen accidentally, nor do they occur without significant sacrifice.

On behalf of the Oakhill community, I would like to express my sincere gratitude to our outstanding French and Visual Arts teachers who have committed their holidays to accompany students on this remarkable journey. While many people understandably look forward to spending holiday periods with family and friends, these dedicated staff members have chosen to invest their time, expertise and energy into creating an educational experience of exceptional quality for our students. International tours require months of planning, detailed organisation, replanning and reorganisation. Behind every museum visit, language class, train journey and cultural activity lies an enormous amount of preparation. Most importantly, there is a team of passionate teachers determined to ensure that students gain the greatest possible benefit from every moment of the experience. We thank them for their generosity, professionalism and dedication. Their willingness to place students at the centre of their holiday period reflects the very best of our profession and our Oakhill College community. I would also like to acknowledge and thank the parents and families whose support has made this opportunity possible. Educational travel of this nature represents a significant investment, not only financially but also emotionally. Parents place their trust in Oakhill College and recognise the immense value of experiences that foster cultural understanding, language acquisition, artistic appreciation and personal growth. Their commitment enables students to participate in learning experiences that will enrich their education far beyond the classroom. As students prepare to embark on this adventure, they will do so as ambassadors for Oakhill College. They will carry with them curiosity, enthusiasm and a willingness to learn from the people, places and cultures they encounter.

Personally, I am incredibly excited to be joining the students and staff on what will undoubtedly be a trip of a lifetime. I look forward to experiencing the language, culture and artistic treasures of Lyon and Paris alongside our students, and to witnessing the growth, confidence and understanding that such an authentic learning experience fosters. We wish all participants safe travels, open minds and unforgettable experiences.

Bon voyage to our students, thank you to our dedicated staff, and sincere gratitude to our supportive families. France awaits, and with it an extraordinary opportunity to learn, grow and be inspired.

The College community gathered this week for the Year 12 Farewell Assembly, a special occasion recognising the many talents, achievements and contributions of our graduating students.

A highlight of the Assembly was the acknowledgement of our 2026 student leaders, who were presented with a gift in recognition of their outstanding leadership and service to the College over the past 12 months. The Assembly also marked an important transition as our incoming 2027 Captains were formally introduced, with the 2026 Captains handing over the responsibility of leadership to the next generation of student leaders.

Our Year 12 Music 1 and Music II students provided wonderful entertainment, performing beautiful renditions of The Climb and Landslide, showcasing the depth of musical talent within the cohort.

In Agriculture, Mrs Trestrail presented the 2026 Heather Muirhead Perpetual Trophy to Lachlan Broome and congratulated the College Show Team on its exceptional performance at the Greater Sydney Schools Cattle Competition.

Most impressively, Oakhill was crowned Overall Champion School for Cattle Results, an outstanding achievement reflecting the hard work and contribution of every member of the Show Team.

The Assembly also celebrated the remarkable creativity and innovation displayed at the recent HSC TAS and Visual Arts Showcase. Mr McLeod and Ms Hogan reflected on the outstanding Major Works presented by Year 12 students and announced the winners of the TAS People's Choice Awards.

Students studying Commerce were also recognised for their outstanding efforts at this year's Market Day. Through the creation, marketing and operation of their own business stalls, students gained valuable real-world entrepreneurial experience while showcasing impressive innovation and teamwork.

Special congratulations were extended to Smash & Sweet Co, recipients of the inaugural Market Day Best Business Award. Team members included Ryan Arabi, Chris Bazouni, Leo Carroll, Jack Dockery, Wyatt Ferguson, Armaan Massali-Singh, Skanda Prasanna, Aidan Studders and Lachlan Tucker.

The Assembly concluded by recognising the achievements of Oakhill athletes at the ISA Athletics Carnival held at Sydney Olympic Park. Following strong performances at the College Athletics Carnival earlier in the year, Oakhill fielded a highly competitive team.

After a demanding day of competition, Oakhill finished second in the Junior, Intermediate and Senior Boys divisions, securing second place overall in the Division 1 Champion School Competition.

Despite competing with smaller numbers, the girls' team delivered an outstanding performance, achieving first place in the Division 2 Senior Girls Competition.

This week, we farewelled the Class of 2026 with several celebrations. providing a fitting tribute to their years at the College. Beginning with a special Graduation Mass, students gathered in reflection and gratitude before taking part in the cherished tradition of walking down the drive, applauded by staff and students who lined the pathway in recognition of their achievements and becoming the Oakhill Graduate. The Graduation Ceremony celebrated the many accomplishments of the cohort, while the morning tea provided an opportunity for students, families and staff to share memories and mark the occasion together. The day also saw students share their farewell video, capturing the friendships, experiences, incredible staff and milestones that have defined their time at Oakhill.

We thank the Class of 2026 for the spirit, leadership and character they have brought to our community and wish them every success for the future.

This November, our senior Drama students and the Oakhill Shakespeare Company present William Shakespeare’s 'Much Ado About Nothing', reimagined at a massive music festival on the eve of the new millennium.

Twenty years after their band spectacularly broke up, Beatrice and Benedick find themselves backstage together again. They insist they can’t stand each other. Everyone else has other ideas.

Expect headliners, heartbreak, and hilarity, as Shakespeare’s comedy of love, lies and misunderstanding collides with live music, 90s nostalgia and a reunion concert that has been two decades in the making.

To assist parents/guardians, please find below the schedule of proposed and past Service and Cultural Tours for 2023 – 2030. These tours are dependent on a number of factors such as demand, staffing, price and local/global factors which may prevent such a tour that particular year.

On Friday 11th September, the Year 11 and 12 Music classes were privileged enough to take an excursion to the Sydney Opera House to watch the Sydney Symphony Orchestra’s performance of Mozart's Requiem. 

This was a truly captivating experience, witnessing a mesmerising live display of one of the most honoured musical items of the Classical period. Accompanying the orchestra was a magnificent choir, whose expressive vocal performance and powerful harmonies added profound emotional depth to the piece, making the experience even more moving and memorable for all of us.

Year 9 Music were able to experience the incredible Lion King recently in Sydney. Below is a student recount of the excursion:

We had lots of fun at the Year 9 music excursion last week. It was nice to see the classic Disney film brought to life on stage with many costumes and props creating the animals. We all enjoyed the experience, with a personal highlight being the two percussion players we could see on the side who played many different types of percussion, building the iconic sound of the African inspired music.

The Visual Arts Faculty at Oakhill College are fortunate to work with an extraordinary community of young makers. Across every year group, our students bring curiosity, imagination, and a fearless willingness to experiment with new materials, processes, and ideas. Each month, our staff select one standout student whose artwork demonstrates not only exceptional technical ability, but also a sophisticated and thoughtful conceptual vision.

This month, our spotlight turned to Year 8 Visual Arts — and what a phenomenal cohort to celebrate. Among them, one student rose above an already impressive field. His dedication, creativity, and consistent pursuit of excellence have made him a true standout in the classroom.

We are thrilled to announce Patrick Sun as our Artist of the Month. Patrick was the winner of the Oakhill College Visual Arts Department Inaugural Teachibald Portrait Competition. Patrick created a portrait of his teacher, Mr Georgiou.

Patrick approaches every artmaking task with remarkable focus and enthusiasm, pushing himself to refine his skills and explore new possibilities. His ability to capture the likeness and character of a subject through portraiture is nothing short of outstanding — a talent that continues to evolve with every artwork he produces. Patrick’s commitment to growth, experimentation, and craftsmanship is inspiring to witness. A huge congratulations to Patrick. His artistic journey is only just beginning, and we cannot wait to see how far his creativity will take him.

The Year 7 Music Incursion by Junkyard Beats was performed during Period 1 on Friday 11th September. The event was an exciting performance that showcased unique rhythms created from everyday trash. They played many different beats, including a routine using household items from the kitchen, such as pots, pans, and appliances. After that, the Year 7 students had the opportunity to play along with them using shakers, buckets, and clapping plates, which was really fun.

Congratulations to the students who have been nominated for HSC Shape for TAS Industrial Technology and Design & Technology. 

These nominations reflect the past 12 months of hard work and commitment to complete these impressive projects.

Shape is the annual showcase of outstanding HSC TAS works, with the final selection process still to determine which performances will be featured at the Seymour Centre in February 2027.

Year 8 participated with great enthusiasm in the European Handball Competition held across Weeks 7, 8 and 9. All sixteen Tutor Groups competed in the elimination rounds, demonstrating strong teamwork and sportsmanship.

The competition concluded with the Grand Final on Friday 18th September, attended by many supportive students and staff. After a highly competitive match, Tutor Group 07 secured a well-deserved victory.

Show Team celebrated an outstanding achievement at the Greater Sydney School Cattle Competition Presentation Evening, taking out the title of Overall School Champion for Cattle.

The Greater Sydney School Cattle Competition is an interschool competition that runs over 100 days, providing students with hands-on experience of the beef industry. Each participating school is allocated a steer to feed, manage and prepare for competition, while learning about growth rates, nutrition, animal welfare and market specifications. Students also demonstrate their knowledge and skills through cattle parading and beef judging competitions.

Oakhill students excelled across multiple sections of the competition. In the steer competitions, Oakhill placed 3rd in Best Presented Steer, 4th in Led Steer, 5th in Carcase, and achieved an impressive 2nd place for Overall Weight Gain.

Individual student performances were equally impressive. Max Seipolt (Year 7) was awarded 1st Place in Junior Beef Judging, Lachlan Paredes (Year 11) won 1st Place in Senior Beef Judging, and Luca Compton (Year 10) received 1st Place in Senior Experienced Parader.

The combination of strong team performances and individual excellence resulted in Oakhill being named the Overall School Champion for Cattle, a testament to the hard work, dedication and commitment shown by students throughout the 100-day competition.

Oakhill College’s Theatresports teams took to the stage at the annual Pymble Ladies’ College Theatresports Competition, competing against some of Sydney’s strongest improvisation schools. With eight schools represented across the Junior and Intermediate divisions, Oakhill faced formidable competition from Abbotsleigh, Barker College, Knox Grammar School, Northholm Grammar School, Pymble Ladies’ College, Rosebank College and St Aloysius’ College.

The evening began with the Junior Division, where enthusiasm, creativity and school spirit were on full display. Our Junior team entered the competition with confidence and quickly established themselves as a force to be reckoned with. Delivering consistently entertaining, highly skilled performances across all three rounds, the team achieved the highest score in every round. Their outstanding improvisation, teamwork and quick thinking saw them crowned Junior Division Champions, an exceptional achievement and a testament to their hard work and dedication.
The Intermediate Division proved equally exciting, featuring four challenging rounds, including the demanding Open Scene event. Competing against highly skilled performers from across the region, the Oakhill team demonstrated resilience, creativity and strong stagecraft throughout the evening. While they did not place this time, they represented the College with distinction in a fiercely contested competition. Congratulations must also go to St Aloysius’ College, whose exceptional performances, sharp wit and strong character work earned them full marks in every round and the overall championship title.

A special congratulations to Angelo Chichizola, who was awarded the Confidence Medal for his outstanding performance throughout the evening. His excellent stage presence, fearless commitment to each scene and positive contribution to his team exemplified the qualities celebrated by the award.

Beyond the results, the evening celebrated collaboration, creativity and courageous performance. Our students demonstrated remarkable commitment to the spirit of Theatresports, supporting one another, embracing challenges and proudly representing Oakhill College on and off the stage.
Congratulations to the following students for their outstanding efforts and for continuing to strengthen Oakhill’s reputation as a leading force in the Theatresports community. Their enthusiasm, teamwork and dedication were a credit to both themselves and the College.

The ISA Athletics event was held on Tuesday 15th September at SOPAC. Qualification for this carnival was via the Athletics Carnival in Term 2. Oakhill assembled a strong team to compete at the event and as usual, they were outstanding both on and off the track. The overall team results are as follows:

Summer Sport - Season Commencement

Following the association meetings, there has been an adjustment to the ISA Summer Sport season which impacts the majority of our athletes. It is also challenging for Year 11 students, who will spend Wednesday to Friday at retreat, and miss some last minute messages which could impact them. All students and parents are encouraged to regularly check their emails in Week 1 of Term 4. The changes are as follows:

Basketball - ISA Round 1 will now be held on Saturday 17th October. All students should have the required playing shorts and will be provided a singlet prior to their first match.

ISA Cricket - the opens (1st and 2nd) Cricket will begin on Saturday 17th October. Like Basketball, students are expected to have the correct playing uniform ahead of the first match.

Junior Cricket - the competition will resume from the October holiday break on Saturday 17th October. Their season will commence prior to this date.

Touch Football - there will be trial and final grading matches held on Saturday 17th October for all Touch Football players.

‘The biggest communication problem is we do not listen to understand. We listen to reply.’  Stephen R. Covey

It is a valuable lesson for young athletes to master in their journey, especially when given feedback on performance or execution of a skill. Challenging a person often leads to mis-communication of the message which is trying to be conveyed. If we can improve the ability of our students to listen to understand, they are going to be at an advantage compared to others throughout life. The ideal reply from a coachable player is ‘ok’; following reflection, they are welcome to seek further clarification.

Team of the Week - Girls ISA Athletics Team

Often smaller in size, the Oakhill girls made their presence felt both on the track and in the field events by capturing the Division 2 Shield. They were not only great in competition; they were supportive of all Oakhill athletes on the day and always willing to help out when required.

CIS Information

Families are reminded that if their child is an elite athlete in a particular sport and wishes to trial for a CIS team, they must reach out to the sports department to notify them of their interest. It is the responsibility of families to check the CIS website for information on the dates of trials and competition, ensuring their availability for all events.

Earlier this year, Maddison Laing (Year 12) achieved a lifelong dream when she was selected to represent Team Australia at the World Dance Championships in Florida.

Out of hundreds of applicants across Australia, Maddison was chosen as one of 20 elite athletes to wear the green and gold. After marching in an Olympic-style opening ceremony, Maddison and Team Australia performed brilliantly against the world's best, securing an incredible 6th place.

Congratulations to Alex Eason (Year 11) who competed at the School Sport Australia Cross Country event on Tuesday 15th September. Competitive as always, Alex placed 1st in the 16/17 years boys event with a time of 20:02. This is another tremendous achievement at a national level.

Congratulations to Alex on an outstanding achievement at the State Club Gymnastics Championships, where he was crowned All-Around Champion and claimed 1st Place overall.

This result is the latest milestone in an impressive gymnastics journey that began when Alex was just five years old. Through years of dedication, perseverance and hard work, he has consistently performed at the highest level, earning recognition as one of the state's leading young gymnasts.

Adding to his success, Alex was recently selected in the 2026 State Team, a significant honour that reflects both his talent and commitment to the sport.

Congratulations to Mr Flynn Farrell, Vice Captain (Class of 2025) on his selection in the Australian Under 18 Rugby Union Team, a remarkable achievement and the highest representative honour available to a player of his age.

Flynn will take the field on Friday 25th September, when the Australian Under 18s face the Australian Schools team at Knox Grammar before departing on a two-match tour of New Zealand.

Having been one of the younger students in his Year 12 cohort last year, Flynn remained eligible for Under 18 selection and has demonstrated outstanding perseverance and commitment throughout his rugby journey this season. His selection is a testament to the dedication, resilience and hard work he has shown both on and off the field.
