Oakhill College students attended the Year 12 Combined Schools Tertiary Evening held at Cherrybrook Technology High School on Thursday, 23 August 2018.
Our College is one of 10 local schools that come together to provide this opportunity for Year 12 students to meet with the major Sydney based universities, TAFE NSW, many of the Sydney based Private Tertiary Education Providers and Defence Force Recruitment.
The students had the opportunity to browse through the mini careers market and discover the many opportunities available through university, TAFE and other providers. Students were able to attend sessions on “Applying for Scholarships” learning about what they need to include in their applications. Other sessions covered ”Alternative Pathways to Achieving their Career Goals”.
The Key Note Speakers for the evening were Eddie Woo – 2018 Australian of the Year Local Hero/Top 10 Finalist for Worldwide Teacher of the Year and creator & presenter of WooTube – Maths You Tube Channel. Eddie spoke about the “Four Compass Points to a Career” and humorously linked it to his life experiences.
Erin Keech (alumni of Oakhill College), currently the Community Engagement Officer for the Universities Admission Centre (UAC), spoke about the difference between the HSC and ATAR results; how students could apply for university through UAC; the offer process for university; schemes such as Schools Recommendation Scheme (Early Offer), Adjustment Factor Points (Bonus Points) including the Educational Access Scheme and Equity Scholarships.
Overall students felt that the evening helped them gain further information and clarification regarding their options for their pathway beyond school.
