Boys have been playing rugby at Oakhill since 1955 and current players enjoy some of the best facilities in NSW, with Oakhill boasting four fields within the college campus.
Since joining the ISA competition in 1996, Oakhill 1st XV teams have won the ISA Shield on six occasions – 2015 being the most recent- whilst age group teams have all enjoyed a lot of success with many teams going through their competitions undefeated. Oakhill won the ISA Rugby Schools Championship Shield in 2007, 2009(joint winner), 2010 & 2012. This Shield is awarded to the school that gained most competition points across all grades. In 2015, the College came second in the Shield.
In 2016 the 1st XV once again made it to the final of the Waratah Shield competition. Oakhill has participated in the Waratah Shield since 1963, playing in 9 finals and winning the Shield in 1994.
During the pre-season, the College has annual fixtures against notable GPS and CAS rugby schools such as St’ Joseph’s, Newington and Barker College.
Touring is an important part of Oakhill rugby and Opens teams usually tour overseas every two years. Previous touring destinations includes UK, Ireland, Canada, New Zealand and South America. In 2016, Oakhill sent a touring party of 42 students to play rugby throughout Spain and France. In 2018, Oakhill Rugby travelled to the USA and played games in New York, New Orleans and Los Angeles.
All boys are encouraged to play for Oakhill, regardless of their ability. In each age group we field a minimum of three teams so players are graded according to their ability. Each team is assigned one and in most cases two accredited coaches. Our coaching staff is made up of teachers, parents, ex students and senior students.
Oakhill rugby teams are enthusiastically supported by the Oakhill Rugby Committee, consisting of parents and other supporters. The committee meet monthly during the rugby season and assist with fund raising, field set up and manning the wonderful BBQ in operation under Benildus Hall at each home game. Parents are encouraged to become involved in this committee.
Although Oakhill teams have to travel quite a distance for some games, transport is provided for away games at Bathurst and Orange.
